Perpignan Information

Perpignan Airport informationPerpignan is a wonderful old historic city and a fascinating place to explore.  You should begin your voyage of discovery at the fourteenth century Le Castillet gateway which has a red and yellow Catalan flag hanging outside it and a red brick tower which dates back to 1368.  It is all that remains of the city walls which were destroyed at the turn of the century.

The area which was once a prison now houses the Casa Pairal Catalan Folk Culture Museum which is full of artefacts ranging from kitchen implements to musical instruments (including a Catalan alternative of bagpipes) to traditional costumes.  You can climb to the roof here and have some magnificent views of MountCanigou.

A short walk from here along the rue Louis-Blanc you will find the Place de la Loge which is the pedestrianised heart of the Old Town.   The Loge de Mer dominates this area which is full of cafes and bars.  Covered with gargoyles and slatted balustrades, it was designed to hold Perpignan’s stock exchange and maritime court.  Next door is the Hotel de Ville with Maillol’s famous statue of La Mediterranee in its courtyard and the fifteenth century Palais de la Deputation which was once the parliament of Roussillon.

On Place Gambetta is the magnificent Cathedrale St Jean full of elaborate Catalan altar pieces and the Devot Christ wooden crucifix which dates back to 1400. Down the rue de la Revolution-Francaise and rue de l’Anguille is the Arab and Romany Quarter which is full of North African shops and cafes and is where the daily market is held in Place Cassanyes.

Les Trois Soeurs also on the Place Gambetta is a great bar which looks on the Cathedral and is a good place for people watching.  Al Tres and El Corazon a few yards away on the rue de la Poissonnerie are good places for tapas.

Travelling around Perpignan and the surrounding area is relatively easy with
the gare SNCF on avenue Général-de-Gaulle, and buses next to Pont Arago, on avenue Général-Leclerc. For information and tickets for city buses, visit Kiosque CTP (Mon-Sat 9.00 - 12 noon and 13.45 - 18.15pm) on place Péri, near the regional tourist office.

Above is only a taste of what you can expect when holidaying in Perpignan.  For more details on shopping, museums, beaches, golf and restaurants you can click on the relevant sections of this website.  When you are in Perpignan then take a short walk along the River Basse to the Municipal Tourist Office in the Palais des Congrès at the end of boulevard Wilson.
