Perpignan Information

Perpignan Airport informationThe Languedoc Roussillon area of France specializes in textiles and pottery with bold geometric patterns and strong and sturdy well made furniture. On the rue Sant-Vicens you will find the Centre Sant-Vicens which is run by about twelve independent merchants and offers the best selection of Catalan pottery, furniture and carpets in the area.

Another recommended place for Catalan crafts is La Maison Quinta at 3 rue des Grands-des-Fabriques which is four kilometres south of the centre of Perpignan (follow the signs to Enne and Collioures).

On Wednesday and Saturday mornings try the open air market in Place Riguad, packed full of the most wonderful fresh local produce including fruit and vegetables, cooked meats, bread, honey and olives. The market on Saturday morning also has an excellent selection of organic produce.  If you prefer to shop under cover in a supermarket, then you should visit the huge Auchan hypermarket which sells just about everything at very reasonable prices and is located at the southern end of Perpignan.

The general market which again sells fresh produce but also has some local crafts is held every morning in Place Cassanyes.  On Sunday morning between 8.00 and 13.00 you will find a flea market on the ave du Palais des Expositions which is the equivalent of a UK car boot sale with all the locals turning up and trying to get rid of objects they no longer want or use.  But one man’s junk is another man’s treasure …

During the summer months Perpignan holds a Vide Grenier which is a street market selling second hand clothes and other goods, while in the autumn there´s the Vendage (wine festival) to look forward to.  The Languedoc-Roussillon region is the largest wine producing region in the whole of France, which is quite a feat in itself. Consequently all types of wine can be sampled here from light and fruity to rich and full bodied.  Most are red and predominatly Vins de Pays and Cotes du Roussillon. Corbieres and Saint Chinian are excellent every day wines while Cabernet Sauvignon is considered one of the highest quality wines.

There are nine caves on the outskirts of Perpignan run by wine producers which you can visit and sample the wines before purchasing.  Vins de Table is the cheapest range, but on the whole none of the wines are expensive and certainly not on a par with UK prices
