Perpignan Information
Perpignan is a beautiful historic town with numerous attractions including churches, monuments and museums. Detailed below are the major museums which you can visit during your stay in the Languedoc.
The Castillet Musee des Arts et Traditions Populaires Catalans is in a building which dates back to the fourteenth century with a tower which you can climb to get a wonderful view of the city, the Roussillon plain, sea and Pyrenees and in particular the Canigou Mountain. Nine themed rooms provide an insight into the traditional Catalonia with regional artifacts which illustrate the folklore and history of the area.
The Hyacinthe Rigaud Museum of Fine Art is in a beautiful old town house in the centre of Perpignan. Here you can see a collection of paintings from the Gothic period and works by Rigaud (who was born in Perpignan), Clave, Maillol, Manolo, Dufy, Picasso and Greuze. There is also a unique collection of contemporary works by over two hundred artists.
The Joseph Puig Museum of Coins and Medals is on the avenue de Grande-Bretagne and is unique in France with a major collection of rare coins and medals spanning periods of history and locations in France, and in particular Catalonia and Roussillon.
Musee de L’Aviation was created in 1976 and is situated at Mas Palegry. You will be able to see a large variety of original planes and models. It is open from Monday afternoon to Saturday.
The Museum d'Histoire Naturelle is located in the eighteenth century Zagarriga Hotel and includes a laboratory with molluscs, birds, fossils and minerals. There are several separate exhibitions with a Fish room (regional and exotic species), Birds room ( birds of prey and countryside birds), dolphin and humpback whale skeletons , human skulls (Neolithic fossil), Mammals room (with dioramas), Geology room ( local minerals and Pilocene vertebrate fossils from Serrat d'En Vaquer), Insects room (exotic butterflies) and Egyptian room with a mummy.
