Information
Carcassonne airport is located just off junction 23 of the A61 motorway.
The signposting is initially a little vague so when you come off the
motorway follow signs for Mazamet. You’ll then see signs for
the airport, which is called Salvaza. The airport is just 3km from the ancient, medieval town of Carcassonne.
It is a small airport with just one terminal which has the capacity to handle 400,000 passengers.
The airport is 91 kms from Toulouse located on the A64 which can also be reached by train in just over an hour.
Carcassonne Airport Car Hire
There
are three hire car companies that operate out of Carcassonne airport.
Before booking your car you should read about our experiences with Languedoc
car hire.
The three car hire companies with desks at the airport are: Avis at Carcassonne airport - Europcar at Carcassonne airport and Hertz at Carcassonne airport
All three of these hire companies have desks within the main terminal building and are very easy to find. The car hire car park is very close so you don't have to worry too much if you've got a lot of luggage.

Carcassonne Airport Taxis
Getting
a taxi at Carcassonne airport is as easy as falling out of bed. The
airport is so small that you can't fail to see where the taxis line
up. As soon as you walk out of the terminal, there they are in front
of you. Journey time into the city is 10 minutes and the cost is around €12.00 and to La Cite €15.
If you don't fancy waiting in a line for a taxi, or you have specific requirements, such as a large group wanting to travel together, then you could always pre-book private Carcassonne Transfers.
Carcassonne Airport Buses
If
you don't want to hire a car or take a taxi, you can take a Navette (shuttle
bus) from Carcassonne Airport to the city centre. There are buses throughout the day to coincide with flight times and a shuttle bus runs 20 minutes after every flight for €5 single fare. There is no charge
for children under the age of 7. The journey time is approx 20 mins
and you get your ticket on board. There is no need to pre-book.
The buses leave from just outside the airport building with stops at the SNCF Railway Station, Place Davilla Cathedral (Dome) and City main gate. For more details telephone 04 684 78222
Carcassonne Airport Parking
There is only one public car park, P1, which is located directly
in front of the terminal building. You take your ticket on entering
the car park and then pay at the ticket machine in the terminal building
before leaving. We have written a guide to the tariffs for car parking at Carcassonne Airport
Shopping at Carcassonne Airport
Shopping for presents for friends and relatives back home is really
best done while you’re out and about during your holiday, as
the options at the airport are very limited.
Having said that, if you suddenly realise that you’ve forgotten to get Auntie Madge a thank you pressie for looking after the cat. There is the Délices et des Ailes" gift shop on the ground floor of the terminal building with a small selection of wines, gift wrapped bottles of local olive oil etc. You can also get yourself some sweets for the journey, a newspaper, or even a book about the region.
Bars & Restaurants at Carcassonne Airport
If
you want a coffee or a snack, then the good old French airport café/bar
is well represented with a snack bar on the ground floor of the terminal
building. There’s the usual offering of tea (doesn’t automatically
come with milk so don’t forget to ask), coffee, beer and soft
drinks.
If you’re feeling peckish, then they’ll do you a quick baguette sandwich, croque monsieur (A kind of cheese on toast), slice of pizza or croissant.
That’s pretty much it really. If you want something a bit more substantial, then there’s the Restaurant Le Salvaza on the first floor. Here you can choose from a small selection of set menus or go a la carte and choose freely from the whole menu. Naturally there’s also the usual offerings of wines, beers, spirits etc www.salvaza.fr
