During the 14th century Avignon was the seat of the papacy. The Gothic Palais des Papes dominates the city with its surrounding ramparts and the remains of the Pont Saint-Benezet 12th century bridge over the Rhone. The Petit Palais and the Romanesque Cathedral of Notre-Dame-des-Doms also illustrate the leading role played by Avignon in Christian Europe.
