Avignon Airport Information

Le Pont d'AvignonDuring the 14th century Avignon was the seat of the papacy. The Gothic Palais des Papes dominates the city with its surrounding ramparts and the remains of the Pont Saint-Benezet 12th century bridge over the Rhone. The Petit Palais and the Romanesque Cathedral of Notre-Dame-des-Doms also illustrate the leading role played by Avignon in Christian Europe.

Avignon also has its share of museums, ranging from Modern Art exhibits to artifacts from Roman and pre-Roman times.

The Avignon Theatre Festival is famous the world and for three or four weeks in July the city is full of street performers, actors and musicians with some performances taking place inside the Pope's Palace.

The vast majority of performances are in French but a number of foreign companies perform and even if you do not go to any of the events it is worth being there for the atmosphere and street theatre.

You can hire a car from Avignon Airport and explore this beautiful region of France including nearby Arles with its Roman monuments and Le Pont du Gard which is about 30km to the west which has probably the finest Roman aquaduct still in existence, and a is a great place for hiking and canoeing.
