Safari Park At Sigean near Narbonne
The Sigean Safari Park is a Reserve Africaine situated fifteen kilometres south of Narbonne and eight kilometres to the north of the town of Sigean. It is in a beautiful setting surrounded by the Peyriac and Sigean ponds and natural Mediterranean vegetation.
It is a wonderful place to take the family as it has over 3800 animals and reptiles and approximately 160 different species of birds. The park was opened in 1974 and stretches over 660 acres of scrubland, woods and lagoons.
It has recreated equatorial habitats where you can explore parts by coach, car or on foot to observe hippopotamuses, rhinoceroses, giraffes, elephants, camels, alligators, lions and springboks in their natural environment. There is a bird reserve and lagoon with over a thousand birds, pink flamingos, ibis, storks and pelicans and an island full of chimpanzees at the southern end of the park.
The area of the safari park where the lions and Tibetan bears live is only accessible by car (with the windows and sunroof securely locked) so try and avoid undertaking this part of the trip in the hot midday sun. It is a full day out and the quickest time in which you can complete the visit is about three hours (one hour in the car or coach and two hours on foot).
Sigean Safari Park is open every day from 9.00 am to 9.00 pm. It has been specially designed to create a territory identical to what animals would experience in the wild, so that it can achieve four aims:
- Research – to educate visitors with information on wild animals
- Conservation – to breed species which are threatened with extinction
- Education – gain a better understanding of wild animals regarding their interdependence and relationship with their environment
- Recreation – to enable visitors to observe the beauty of wild animals in their natural habitat
