The Town Of Magalas
Magalas lies in an area of unspoilt natural beauty on a plain, with the mountains of the Languedoc National Park as is backdrop to the north and Mediterranean Sea and beaches a 25 minute drive to the south. It is surrounded by vineyards as far as the eye can see and is just a ten minute drive from Beziers. The Spanish border is only one and a half hours away and Barcelona a two and a half hour drive. You have a choice of airports to fly into with Montpellier being the nearest at forty minutes away and Carcassonne, Perpignan and Nimes one and a half hours.
It is a medieval village in a wine producing area surrounded by large vineyards producing some of the most popular wines in the region. .There is a large supermarket and local wine outlet where you can sample the different wines before purchasing. You will also find the famous Chateau de Grezan here which is owned by the Lanson family (of champagne fame), which has an excellent restaurant and serves it own Faugeres wine
Dating back to the sixth century BC and once occupied by the Romans, historic Magalas offers many attractions including the Fouzilhon recently restored ramparts; Roquessels tenth century fort which stands on the hillside dominating the village; Autignac mill and Pousse Tire fountain dating back to the twelfth century; Oppidum de Montfo thirteenth century church with its medieval doors and numerous halls and Saint Genies de Fontedit gate with its marble frescos and Chapel St Fulcran. The oldest rustic dwellings here are made of clay bricks or stone and have yielded a large quantity of ceramics and amphorae which illustrate the important commercial role played by this settlement from the Iron Age through the Roman occupation.
Leisure and sports amenities include large amusement and water park for family days out at Vias and Cap d’Agde; two golf courses just twenty minutes away at Lamalou and Beziers; watersports and a freshwater swimming at Lake Salagou; and beautiful walks and treks in the Montagnes Noire and Languedoc Regional Park.
