Nimes Airport Information

Ampitheatre at NimesOriginally known as Nemausus, Nimes is laid out in true Roman fashion following a grid pattern with its drinking water supplied by a 50km long canal.

It is the birthplace of denim (de Nîmes) and in the early 1900s the town’s merchants exported the cloth to the United States in order to make sails for ships, tarpaulins and workmen’s trousers.

The main tourist attractions here include the Maison Carre Roman Temple dedicated to Emperor Augustus which dates from the fourth or fifth Century BC and is one of the best preserved anywhere in the world.

Les Arenes was Inspired by the Coliseum in Rome with two stories of vaulted arches and is one of the most complete amphitheatres in the world. It has 34 tiers with a seating capacity for 20,000 people and is still used for bull fights, pop concerts and sporting events.

You can hire a car from Nimes Airport and explore this beautiful region of France taking in the Pont du Gard which is just 20km northeast of the city and is an aqueduct which was constructed during the first century AD to supply the city with fresh water from the Eure river. Three tiers of arches over 49 metres high span 275 metres across the River Gardon. Or you can visit nearby Uzes which is a medieval market town full of antique shops and shady squares or Tour Fenestrelle which is the local equivalent of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
