Carcassonne Airport Information

Carcassonne CastleCarcassonne’s ancient walled city has a collection of drawbridges, towers and atmospheric cobbled streets and was rumoured to be the inspiration for Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty.

Carcassonne is actually two cities in one as besides the walled city there is a lower town that dates back to the Middle Ages. Known as the Bastide Saint Louis it is full of traditional French bars, shops, cafés and restaurants.

The main attractions in Carcassonne are the double wall surrounding the city with the outer wall the work of Louis IX and parts of the inner wall dating back to Roman times: the Château Comtal citadel with 31 towers of the upper town dates from the twelfth century. There are guided tours of the château which also take in sections of the walls and the amphitheatre: Pont Vieux and the banks of the Aude are a wonderful place to picnic once you’ve done the upper town. The bridge dates from the fourteenth century with a Gothic chapel at its western end dating from 1538: the Place du Château is an old-fashioned store is stuffed full of regional specialties including cassoulet, olives aux herbes and grés de la cité which is a heavenly mix of almonds and vanilla wrapped in puff pastry.

You can hire a car from Carcassonne Airport and explore this beautiful region of France which has nearby historical towns of Narbonne, Enserune, Collioure, Salses and Beziers, site of the infamous massacre of the Cathar ‘heretics’.
