In Montpellier you will find interesting architecture from all the periods of France's history including an 18th century water tower, aqueduct and narrow streets lined with tall narrow houses.
You can wander around the attractive ancient buildings and elegant hotels particuliers (private mansions) of Montpellier’s historic centre, which also offers a 14th century Cathédrale de Saint Pierre, 16th century botanical gardens (le Jardin des Plantes) and the imposing Arc de Triomphe lookalike at the end of rue Foch.
The narrow back streets and attractive squares of Montpellier are full of cafes, bars and restaurants serving southern French cuisine: Place Candolle and Place de la Chapelle Neuve are ideal for al fresco dining.
